This data visualisation shows the air traffic coming into, going out of and flying across the UK on a typical Summer day. It has been created using real data comprising 7,000 flights from a day in June as recorded by our radars and air traffic management systems. The camera has been fixed in one position and activity is shown at 800 times faster than real time. The time runs from midnight to midnight and shows the arrival of early morning traffic coming across the Atlantic in the early hours, the build up through the day and then the calming of flows into the night before the pattern repeats. NATS provides air traffic control services in UK Airspace 24x7x365. Find out more about NATS and Air Traffic Control at nats.aero and nats.aero/blog

Based on independent historical research, flight records and CAA archive material, this visualisation charts the history of the UK’s skies from the 1950s to the present day. From the dawn of the jet-era and Concorde through to the advent of the low cost airlines and the modern age of mass air travel, it catalogues the incredible success story of UK commercial aviation, but also starkly illustrates how the structure of UK airspace has had to evolve – and sometimes struggled - to keep pace with ever growing traffic levels. Now, with over 3 million flights a year expected in the UK by 2030, the design of UK airspace is in urgent need of modernisation.
