  • Petrol vs Electric: UK to ban new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 to reduce pollution - TomoNews

LONDONBritain will ban all sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 in order to reduce air pollution, a move that could potentially revolutionize the automobile industry. UK authorities say diesel emissions have been poorly controlled and diesel vehicles contribute an overwhelming amount of nitrogen dioxide to outdoor air pollution, which is linked to about 40,000 premature deaths in the country a year. In order to tackle air pollution, the UK government will ban all sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2040. Hybrid vehicles will not be included in the ban. According to Reuters, electric cars only account for less than 5 percent of new car registrations in the UK, while the majority of the sales are still in petrol and diesel cars. There are more than 4,500 locations with pub...

The Special Air Service (SAS) is a special forces unit of the British Army. The SAS was founded in 1941 as a regiment, and later reconstituted as a corps in 1950. The unit undertakes a number of roles including covert reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, direct action and hostage rescue. The corps presently comprises 22 Special Air Service Regiment, the regular component under the operational command of United Kingdom Special Forces, and 21 Special Air Service Regiment and 23 Special Air Service Regiment, which are reserve units under the operational command of 1st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade. The Special Air Service traces its origins to 1941 and the Second World War and was reformed as part of the Territorial Army in 1947, named the 21st Special Air Service Regiment. The 22nd Special Air Service Regiment, part of the regular army and later gained fame and recognition worldwide after successfully assaulting the Iranian Embassy in London and rescuing hostages during the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege, which lifted the regiment from obscurity outside the military establishment Little publicly verifiable information exists on the SAS, as the British government usually does not comment on special forces matters due to the nature of their work. The Special Air Service comprises three units: one Regular and two Army Reserve units. The special projects team is the official name for the Special Air Service anti–hijacking counter–terrorism team. It is trained in Close Quarter Battle, sniper techniques and specialises in hostage rescue in buildings or on public transport. The team was formed in the early 1970s after Prime Minister Edward Heath asked the Ministry of Defence to prepare for any possible terrorist attack similar to the massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics therefore ordering that the SAS Counter Revolutionary Warfare wing be raised SUBSCRIBE TO ARMED FORCES Channel to get documentaries firsthand! https://goo.gl/oJmZMC Other Videos : Bangladesh Armed Forces | Bangladesh Military Power - https://goo.gl/RTauMW Russian Military Power - Russia Ground, Navy Forces & Air Force In Massive Action - https://goo.gl/fbfplO French Military Power Europe Superpower Country - https://goo.gl/p0WsA1 Pakistan Military StrengthDeadly Pakistani Secret Weapon For WAR - https://goo.gl/HA43sT Most India's Military Strength - Deadly Indian Armed Forces in Action - https://goo.gl/b1PNWc AMERICA'S TOMAHAWK VS INDIA'S BRAHMOS - WHO WINS - https://goo.gl/IVGLik

British Midland Flight 92 Motorway Plane Crash

Random Fact: The 'brace position' used today was introduced after examination of passenger injuries from this accident! The Kegworth air disaster occurred on 8 January 1989 when British Midland Flight 92, a Boeing 737-400, crashed onto the embankment of the M1 motorway near Kegworth, Leicestershire, UK. The aircraft was attempting to conduct an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport. Of the 126 people aboard, 47 died and 74, including seven members of the flight crew, sustained serious injuries. After taking off from Heathrow at 7:52 pm, Flight BD 092 was climbing through 28,300 feet to reach its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet when a blade detached from the fan of the port (left) engine. While the pilots did not know the source of the problem, a pounding noise was suddenly heard, accompanied by severe vibrations. In addition, smoke poured into the cabin through the ventilation system and a burning smell entered the plane. Several passengers sitting near the rear of the plane noticed smoke and sparks coming from the left engine. The flight was diverted to nearby East Midlands Airport at the suggestion of British Midland Airways Operations. After the initial blade fracture, Captain Kevin Hunt had disengaged the plane's autopilot. When Hunt asked First Officer David McClelland which engine was malfunctioning, McClelland replied: "It's the le... No, the right one". In previous versions of the 737, the left air conditioning pack, fed with compressor bleed air from the left (number 1) engine, supplied air to the flight deck, while the right air conditioning pack, fed from the right (number 2) engine supplied air to the cabin. On the 737-400 this division of air is blurred; the left pack feeds the flight deck but also feeds the aft cabin zone, while the right feeds the forward cabin. The pilots had been used to the older version of the aircraft and did not realise that this aircraft (which had only been flown by British Midland for 520 hours over a two-month period) was different. The smoke in the cabin led them to assume the fault was in the right engine. The pilots throttled back the working right engine instead of the malfunctioning left engine. They had no way of visually checking the engines from the cockpit, and the cabin crew—who did not hear the commander refer to the right hand engine in his cabin address—did not inform them that smoke and flames had been seen from the left engine. When the pilots completely shut down the right engine, they could no longer smell the smoke, which led them to believe that they had correctly dealt with the problem. As it turned out, this was a coincidence: when the autothrottle was disengaged to shut down the right engine, the fuel flow to the left engine was reduced, and the excess fuel which had been igniting in the jet exhaust disappeared; therefore, the ongoing damage was reduced, the smoke smell ceased, and the vibration reduced, although it would still have been visible on cockpit instruments. During the final approach to the East Midlands Airport, more fuel was pumped into the damaged engine to maintain speed, which caused it to cease operating entirely and burst into flames. The flight crew attempted to restart the right engine by windmilling, using the air flowing through the engine to rotate the turbine blades and start the engine, but the aircraft was by now flying at 185 km/h, too slow for this. Just before crossing the M1 motorway, the tail struck the ground and the aircraft bounced back into the air and over the motorway, knocking down trees and a lamp post before crashing on the far embankment and breaking into three sections approximately 519yd (1/4-mile or 475 metres) short from the active runway's paved surface and approximately 689yd (1/3-mile or 630 metres) from its threshold. Remarkably, there were no vehicles on that part of the motorway at the moment of the crash.

There are more than 4,500 locations with public charging point installed in the UK but industry experts told Reuters that more infrastructures would be needed to cope with the change. France also announced it's ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2040. On the city level, Paris, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens announced plans to ban diesel vehicles from city centers by 2025. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Following the success of our two data visualisations – Europe 24 and North Atlantic Skies – we’ve taken a lot of time to think about where to go next - it’s been a typical case of ‘difficult second album syndrome’. Both Europe 24 and North Atlantic Skies were designed to give an overview of the daily complexity and volumes of air traffic across the UK and Europe and to do so in a way that was cinematic and exciting to watch. I think we were able to do that to great effect, but we now want to take you a little deeper. We are therefore very excited to publish UK 24 – your guided tour to some of what makes UK aviation work.

This rare film shows activities at the Farnborough Air Show in 1949, beginning with rare footage of the Cierva Air Horse helicopter. The largest helicopter in the world at the time of its debut, the Air Horse was unusual for using three rotors mounted on outriggers, and driven by a single engine mounted inside the fuselage. Also seen are the Black Arrows (the forerunners of the Red Arrows) as they demonstrate the very meaning of precision during their giant aerobatics display. Aircraft shown include: Aiglet, Alpha, Apollo, Argosy, Avro 707, Avro 7078, Avro Ashton, Avro CF-100, B-1 Canberra, Beverly, Blackburn NA-39, Blackburn YB-1, Brabazon, Bristol 173, Bristol 192, Comet, Dart Herald, Delta-2, DH-110, DH-112 Venom, DH-113 Vampire, Gloster Meteor, Gnat, Gyrodyne Convertiplane, Hawker P-1052, Hawker P-1081, Herald, Handley Paige Hermes V, Heron, Hunter, Javelin, Jet Provost, Lightning, Marathon, Pioneer II, President, Princess, Rotodyne VTOL, Saunders Roe P-531, Scimitar, Sea Hawk, Seamew, Shackleton, Short SB-3, Short SC-1, Short Solent, Short SP-5, Skeeter, Supermarine 510, Swift, Universal, Valiant, Vanguard, Venom, Vickers 355, Victor, Vickers Viscount, Vulcan, W-10 Airhorse, Wessex, Westminster, Wyvern TF-2. One of the more interesting aircraft seen in the show is the Bristol Type 167 Brabazon (seen at the 9 minute mark) a large propeller-driven airliner, designed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, to fly transatlantic routes between the United Kingdom and the United States. Despite its size, roughly between an Airbus A300 and a Boeing 767, it was designed to carry only 100 passengers, each one granted room about the size of the entire interior of a small car. The prototype was completed and flown in 1949, only to prove a commercial failure when airlines felt the airliner was too large and expensive to be useful. In the end, only the single prototype was flown; it was broken up in 1953 for scrap, along with the uncompleted turboprop-powered Brabazon I Mk.II. The Farnborough International Airshow is a week-long event that combines a major trade exhibition for the aerospace and defence industries with a public airshow. The event is held in mid-July in even-numbered years at Farnborough Airport in Hampshire, England. The first five days (Monday to Friday) are dedicated exclusively to trade, with the final two days open to the public. The Farnborough Airshow has its origins in the annual RAF Airshow at Hendon from 1920 to 1937. On 27 June 1932, the Society of British Aircraft Constructors held an exhibition of 35 aircraft by 16 companies at Hendon as a showpiece for the British aircraft industry. After World War II, the show recommenced at Radlett (the site of Handley Page's airfield) in 1946 and was held there until 1948, when the show moved to its present location of Farnborough, Hampshire, home of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, about 30 miles (48 km) south-west of central London. Initially an annual event, the show has been biennial since 1962. It has become an international event that attracts exhibitors from all over the world — with the exception, during the Cold War, of countries behind the Iron Curtain.
